Reigning world champion Martin Haarahiltunen began the defence of his title with a commanding performance at the opening Final of the 2026 FIM Ice Speedway World Championship in Germany.
Held at the iconic Max Aicher Arena in Inzell, the season opener saw the Swedish star deliver a commanding performance from start to finish. Just five weeks after suffering injuries in a crash, Haarahiltunen returned to the ice in remarkable form, winning all five of his qualifying Heat races before securing victory in the Grand Final.
Scandinavian Supremacy
The final results once again highlighted the strength of Scandinavian riders in the sport.
Haarahiltunen stood on the top step of the podium ahead of Finnish riders Max Koivula, who finished second, and Heikki Huusko, who claimed third place. Sweden’s Niclas Svensson, the 2025 world championship runner‑up, crossed the line fourth in the decisive race.
A Competitive Start
The evening began with strong performances from several experienced riders. Austrian veteran Franz “Franky” Zorn won the opening Heat of the night ahead of Germany’s Max Niedermaier.
Soon afterwards Max Koivula made an early statement by defeating local favourite Johann Weber, signalling his intention to fight for the podium.
The Champion Takes Control
Haarahiltunen quickly reminded the field why he remains the benchmark in ice speedway. His victory over fellow Swede Ove Ledström marked the beginning of a remarkable run.
Powerful starts, precise lines through the corners and calm race management allowed the reigning champion to dominate the qualifying stage, completing a perfect sequence of five Heat victories.
New Championship Format
The 2026 season introduced a revised competition format for the World Championship Finals.
The two highest‑scoring riders after the Heat stage advance directly to the Grand Final, while riders placed third to sixth compete in a Last Chance Heat for the remaining two places. The change significantly increased the tension throughout the meeting.
Battle for the Final
As the meeting progressed the fight for the crucial positions intensified.
Koivula and Huusko produced consistent performances while Svensson steadily collected valuable points. Haarahiltunen, however, remained untouchable and finished the Heat stage with a maximum score, securing direct qualification for the Grand Final.
Last Chance Drama
One of the most dramatic moments of the evening came in the Last Chance Heat.
Svensson made a superb start from the inside gate and controlled the race from the front. Behind him Heikki Huusko held off a determined challenge from Luca Bauer to claim the final qualification place.
A Champion’s Victory
When the tapes rose for the Grand Final, Haarahiltunen reacted instantly and secured the inside line into the first corner.
Koivula settled into second place with Huusko and Svensson following behind, but none of them were able to challenge the leader. The Swedish champion gradually extended his advantage and crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of the field.
An Early Title Statement
The victory marked Haarahiltunen’s seventh Grand Final win and the perfect start to his campaign for a fifth consecutive world title.
More importantly, the performance sent a clear message to his rivals: even after injury, the reigning champion remains the rider to beat in the 2026 FIM Ice Speedway World Championship.
