Strategic calls, early battles and a decisive Virtual Safety Car period defined a dramatic start to the 2026 Formula 1 season in Melbourne.
MELBOURNE — The opening round of the 2026 Formula 1 season at Albert Park delivered an intense and dramatic race, featuring battles at the front and several unexpected changes in the running order. George Russell secured victory for Mercedes in the first race of the championship, while teammate Kimi Antonelli completed a one-two finish for the team.
Start: Ferrari Takes the Early Lead

The race began with an immediate fight for the lead. Charles Leclerc made an excellent start and took the lead through the opening corners. During the early laps Ferrari appeared to have the fastest car on track and was able to control the pace with confidence.
Russell remained firmly in contention during the opening phase of the race. The Mercedes driver battled Leclerc closely and the two exchanged positions several times, although the fight remained clean and fair.
At one stage Lewis Hamilton, running just behind the leading pair, closed the gap and briefly threatened to join the battle for the lead. Ultimately the order stabilised, with the front-running drivers turning their focus toward strategy and tyre management.
The Key Moment of the Race

The decisive turning point came during a Virtual Safety Car period.
Mercedes reacted instantly and called both Russell and Antonelli into the pits. With the field circulating at reduced speed, the time lost in the pit lane was significantly smaller than during normal racing conditions.
Ferrari chose to keep Leclerc on track for several additional laps, hoping to gain a strategic advantage later in the race. However, when the Monegasque driver eventually made his stop, he rejoined behind Russell — a position he would ultimately be unable to recover.
The moment effectively reshaped the fight for victory.
Russell Takes Control

Once the pit-stop cycle was completed, Russell emerged in clean air at the front of the field. From that point onward the British driver gradually extended his advantage.
Mercedes demonstrated impressive consistency over longer stints, with tyre degradation appearing noticeably lower than that of its rivals.
As the race entered its final phase, Russell had the situation completely under control. Ferrari was unable to close the gap sufficiently to mount a serious challenge.
Russell crossed the finish line to secure the first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Antonelli Podium

One of the standout performers of the race was Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian driver delivered a composed and mature performance, avoiding mistakes and executing the race strategy effectively.
Second place represents a significant achievement for him after what was, in many ways, a difficult rookie season last year.
“It’s an incredible day for me. The team gave me a fantastic car and I just tried to avoid mistakes,” Antonelli said.
Ferrari: Strong Pace but Strategic Setback
Ferrari demonstrated strong race pace in the opening phase of the event. Leclerc controlled the early laps confidently and appeared capable of challenging for victory.
However, the delayed response to the Virtual Safety Car ultimately cost the team its strategic advantage.
In the end Ferrari had to settle for third place with Leclerc, while Hamilton finished fourth.
Verstappen’s Recovery and Rookie Highlights
Max Verstappen delivered one of the most impressive drives of the race.
After qualifying difficulties left him starting at the back of the grid, the Red Bull driver fought his way through the field to finish inside the top six.
Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad also produced an impressive performance, finishing eighth after a confident and consistent weekend in Melbourne.
Meanwhile Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar — who had started third — was forced to retire due to a mechanical issue. Despite the retirement, his overall performance during the weekend highlighted considerable potential.
Home Race Drama

For Oscar Piastri, the Australian Grand Prix ended before it had even begun.
The McLaren driver lost control of his car during the formation lap and was unable to start the race.
The incident proved a major disappointment for the Albert Park crowd.
Key Takeaways from the Race
The opening race of the season suggests that Mercedes may emerge as the benchmark team in 2026.
Russell already appears to be a serious contender for the drivers’ championship, while Antonelli’s performance hints at the arrival of another major talent in Formula 1.
Ferrari remains close in terms of raw pace, but the team will need to improve its strategic execution if it hopes to consistently challenge for victories.
Next Round
The championship continues with the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.
With its long straights and very different circuit layout, the Shanghai International Circuit should provide a clearer indication of the true competitive order for the 2026 season.
