MotoGP Season Opener – Chang International Circuit, BuriramBy Editorial Staff | March 04, 2026

The 2026 MotoGP season began in uncompromising fashion under the relentless Thai sun. Extreme heat, tyre degradation and strategic discipline defined the opening chapter of the championship at Buriram.
By Sunday evening, Marco Bezzecchi delivered a commanding and mature performance to secure victory for Aprilia Racing. Yet the result tells only part of the story. Across three demanding days, Thailand exposed strengths, weaknesses and ambitions that may ultimately shape the championship narrative.
Friday: Establishing the Pace
Track temperatures exceeded 50°C from the first practice session, immediately placing emphasis on rear-tyre management and throttle precision. Riders who pushed too early paid for it in degradation.
Bezzecchi focused on extended race simulations rather than headline lap times. His consistency stood out — lap times barely drifted despite punishing surface temperatures.
“It’s easy to look fast for one lap,” Bezzecchi explained. “But here the race is about controlling tyre drop. If you over-push on Friday, you pay on Sunday.”
Pedro Acosta displayed explosive short-run pace, attacking corner exits with aggression. Marc Marquez, meanwhile, concentrated on longer data runs, suggesting a strategy built around late-race performance.
Saturday: Pole Position and Sprint Tension
Qualifying confirmed Bezzecchi’s control. His pole lap was measured and clean, maximizing drive onto the main straight without overstressing the rear tyre in the tighter sections.
The Sprint race injected intensity into the weekend. Marquez and Acosta engaged in a fierce duel that culminated in a reviewed overtake and a returned position.
“We are fighting for wins. Hard racing is fine, but respect is important,” said Acosta after claiming Sprint victory.
“When you battle at the front, things happen fast. I accept the decision. The main race is what counts,” Marquez responded calmly.
Sunday: The Grand Prix Unfolds

At lights out, Bezzecchi secured the inside line into Turn 1 and immediately established control. Within three laps he created enough margin to escape turbulent air and manage front-tyre temperatures.
Between Laps 6 and 12, Acosta reduced the gap significantly, applying sustained pressure. Rather than respond aggressively, Bezzecchi tightened his lines and prioritized traction.
The decisive moment came when Marquez, closing rapidly, suffered a sudden rear-tyre performance drop. His podium challenge ended abruptly as grip levels collapsed.
“It’s frustrating,” Marquez admitted. “We had the speed, but in these conditions the margin is very small.”
From Lap 18 onward, Bezzecchi extended his advantage methodically. He crossed the finish line more than five seconds clear, demonstrating composure rather than aggression.
“This victory is about patience,” Bezzecchi concluded. “In Thailand you must accept that you cannot attack every lap.”

Technical Perspective
Aprilia’s success was built on smooth torque delivery, aerodynamic stability and disciplined race management. KTM demonstrated strong peak pace but experienced slightly higher late-race degradation. Ducati’s strategy nearly delivered — until tyre performance intervened.
Conclusion
Thailand 2026 provided more than a season opener — it offered a study in precision under pressure. Aprilia leaves Buriram with momentum, KTM with encouragement, and Ducati with critical lessons.
If this was only Round One, the 2026 championship promises volatility, intensity and tactical depth.
